The last day is finally here
The significance of which remains unclear
No one truly knows what is coming
While the gods all lie slumming
We answer for our own misdeeds
To see if good or evil succeeds
To normal we cling
As we enter the ring
Divided and angry, losers all
Equally watching Democracy fall
Atomic ignorance, chaotic debris
Chains locked ‘round the land of the free
One last day to hold ideals near
The future of America now unclear
The worst part of being “Woke”
The glaring reality of all that broke
Promises of generations before
American Dreams now behind a locked door
Oligarchs revel they alone hold the keys
Standing so much taller with us on our knees
There are more of us, but we remain divided
So many primed for propaganda provided
Our views differ from within the same boat
All of us drown while half of us gloat
Up to the other half to put up a fight
As Democracy threatens to slip from our sight
Time marches on, Midnight approaches
The aware prepare as authoritarianism encroaches
Those who cried Liberty yet enabled a king
Now stand in crowded lines to kiss the ring
What fresh hell will tomorrow unfold?
The future is unclear for America of old
There are those who feel my fears are unfounded
I drank the “Kool-Aid”, I’m untethered, ungrounded
Believe me when I say I hope you are right
That I wake to the same USA that I bid goodnight
That his claim to be a dictator Day One
Is yet another promise he leaves undone
I can surrender my ego with hope and a prayer
That things I always believed in will somehow be there
The proof’s in the pudding, or so they say
History will determine if this is America’s last day
Until then there is only one thing to do
Take care of me and I’ll take care of you
Heroes have departed, we’re all we’ve got
When all that is left is to wait out the clock
Trying to hold on before it all slips away
Hoping and praying for just one more day.
